FAQs
What is a Giclée?
The Definition : Giclée (zhee-klay) - The French word "giclée" is a feminine noun that means a spray or a spurt of liquid. The word may have been derived from the French verb "gicler" meaning "to squirt". A giclée is a high-resolution reproduction done on a special large format printer. Giclée print is a superior museum quality reproduction which became most popular in the past decade.
What is the advantage of Giclée Prints comparing to other fine art reproduction techniques?
Giclée printers use archival inks which make the archival properties of giclées much higher than lithography or silkscreen prints. Special inks we use in our printers have a light fastness rating up to 100 plus years. In most cases, giclées are going to last longer than oil, acrylic, and other medium originals. Visually, giclées are also sometimes better then originals. Although, it is not recommended by ink and media manufacturers that prints be exposed to direct sunlight, especially for long periods of time. If you handle your giclée just as you would with an original - with care and caution - then it will last even longer than the original. The giclée printing process provides better color accuracy than other means of reproduction.
Giclées are often printed with certificates of authenticity, that include a printed signature from the artist, potentially increasing their value over time.
What is a certificate of authenticity?
It is a certificate supplied with each sold giclée print, that provides information about Copyright ownership, print title, size, etc. The certificate gives you a guarantee of museum quality standards and fine art value.
